Penguin Prison and Oliver, we’re calling you out on what is probably going to be the collaboration of the year. The latter duo started dropping hints a couple of months ago and we’ve been in an anticipatory frenzy since. Just seeing those names together knocks the proverbial panties right off our bottoms. Oliver’s slightly rude take on disco has come together with the Penguin’s silky smooth, Prince-inspired style in Holy sonic matrimony. The result of this cosmic alliance is exactly what you’d expect from both artists: a timeless disco anthem, destined to circulate the dancefloor for years to come. “Calling Out” is officially out tomorrow, but you can stream their new single today, exclusively on Idolator! Oh, and if you like what you hear, Penguin Prison is on tour now!
Were you starting to wonder where all the world’s cosmic tuneage went? Maybe just a little? Well put on your helmets, strap yourselves in, and say goodbye to gravity folks. It’s time for a brand new release from Ichisan. You may swoon accordingly.
Earlier in the year he told us he’d be doing a couple of releases as a precursor to his debut album (which is still in the works). This summer he gave fans a taste of his Extra Ball EP, due on Catune Records this fall. Now, a man of his word, here is a preview of the ‘Kristina’ EP, his second installment of space-laced dance tunes! The Kristina collection is set to drop September 15th on Internasjonal Records and includes two new originals. Despite it’s short length, the EP ranges from the soothing psychedelic overtones one might hear in his mixes, to the more dance-fueled guilty pleasures we hear at his shows. Both tracks showcase a more upbeat and raw sound this time around, an atmospheric result of his synthesizer collection no doubt. Read a full review and preview both tracks below! Space disco, we’ve missed you dearly. Read the rest of this entry
Oliver unveiled a brand new track from their upcoming EP! Check out “Fast Forward” below! The EP will be officially released on September 9th, but you can pre-order it now. Once again, it appears that the production duo have come out swinging with another floor-smashing dance tune. When talking about the abundance of quality disco-house artists in Los Angeles, it’s hard to not mention Oliver. These two put an even meaner twist on the region’s sunny brand of the genre. For instance, in “Fast Forward” they’ve taken disco’s inherent romance right of out of the picture, rather going straight for the kill with a beat you could charge with assault. That’s not to say they don’t know how to woo a crowd of course. Listen to the new track above!
Over the last year the production duo Oliver has basically etched themselves into the charts, and for good reason. The recently released Mechanical EP was a colorful, enigmatic collection of originals, and the tip of the iceberg. Known for their vivid and crisp synthesizers, and to-the-point breakdowns, whether up or down tempo they seem to nail it every single time. Just a month ago they released a provocative down-tempo remix of “Her Favorite Song” by Mayer Hawthorne that could get a monk to abandon his celibacy in a heartbeat. Not only successful in the studio, they tour constantly and have built a solid repertoire for their live shows. They make some of the toughest disco-house around, there’s just not a better way to put it. Their newest tune leaves a lot to be desired however.
Just a few days ago they released the Bonnie McKee “American Girl (Oliver Remix)“. In the shadow of their discography there is something about this song that just rubs us the wrong way. Coming off a bit bland and cookie-cutter, the song reminisces the more tasteless side of the Los Angeles club scene they are immersed in. When the verse enters, the breakdowns are OK at best, but the song refuses to stick out. The chorus is as plain as the day is long. Oliver is capable of much, much more, and we hope to seem them break more boundaries. You just can’t fake it, that’s not what we are about. Listen to it in the link below and form your own opinion on the matter, then get back to us!
Oliver (Vaughn Oliver and Oliver Goldstein) are perhaps some of the most influential, rising stars in the disco universe, and the new upcoming EP will further propel them through the tests of time and trend. Their talent and ingenuity as producers is borderline revolutionary, specializing in constant heavy hitters, but always with a guiding synthetic melody.
The duo was signed to the legendary Eskimo Recordings along with Drop Out Orchestra, Aeroplane, The Swiss, Blende, and more, and they have long since proved their right to make themselves quite at home there. Rather than put their time into lots of remixes and DJ radio sets, they meticulously build upon each note of their works until the final product is inarguable. What ensues through this method is a detailed slew of intermittent, but always boundary pushing releases with a payoff only achieved through their diligence and imagination. Have I mentioned they did a masterpiece remix of Aeroplane’s “We Can’t Fly”, a truly flawless composition when untouched, and Oliver definitely earned the honor.
Oliver is now putting together an EP on Fool’s Gold Records and its easily one of our most anticipated drops yet. Here’s a preview of “MYB” off the upcoming release. Much more agressive than some of the previous works were used to, but when accompanied with a Clapton-esque guitar and snyth progression, it can’t be beat. I’m confident I will be hearing this track at the clubs very soon.
