This Saturday the British duo Way Out West is performing LIVE in Denver for the last stop on their US tour! I warn you, sleeping on this might result in a lifetime of self-loathing and detrimental regret, ultimately leaving you permanently damaged and alone. OK that might be exaggerating, but they did establish themselves as one of the most authoritative DJ duos since the turn of the millennium. Imagine for a second, if Danny Boyle and Guy Ritchie made a film together. These guys would helm the soundtrack. Yeah. So, do you have plans this weekend? Perhaps you’re going to Club Vinyl on March 25th for a space-bound foray into the most cosmic party this Spring?
In 1997, Global Underground superstar Nick Warren and teen prodigy Jody Wisternoff combined their talents to form Way Out West, successfully blending multiple genres into one sonic morphogenetic force. Shortly after their inception they carved their own niche out of an already deeply layered musical movement: the trance/progressive house scene of the late 90’s/early 00’s. The duo garnered huge praise for their soul piercing track “The Gift”, released on their debut album Deconstruction in 97′. Being only the second track on their first LP, one could argue it’s the genesis of the breakthroughs they were about to make in the scene. (In fact, it had such an impact in the clubs back then that there is a rumor it was remixed over 400 times.) While emotional and melodic versatility was starkly present in the Global Underground community of the early 2000’s, nobody else seemed to be as proficient at developing it. The danceability of “The Gift” is undeniable, but the emotional response from the song is inescapable. One is powerless against drifting into a deep and personal space when immersed in those vocals, “The Moon and the stars, were the gift you gave”.
That was just the beginning folks. It’s fascinating how we go out of our way to recognize brilliance, but so easily forget that which we honor. Even more fascinating is how quickly we move on from artists even if their talent never faded. Nick and Jody are nowhere near becoming an epitaph of electronic music history. In fact, they are still churning out songs as W.O.W on labels like Anjunadeep, and even their own platforms. Even more admirable is that despite the pressures of evolving music and transitioning generational trends, they have held onto the style that made them what they are through all these years. The 2016 release of “Tuesday Maybe” last year broke a lot of tropes in the dance music realm. After 20 years, they’re actually still capable of topping themselves while staying true to their roots.
There is a fairly definitive reason this duo has stayed relevant and succeeded at remaining in electronic music’s upper echelon. They essentially represent the entire spectrum of 90-00’s dance music under the umbrella of one moniker (minus disco). No other act can flow between break-beat, drum & bass, techno, house, and especially trance like them. If they could, they were nowhere near as adept as W.O.W. In just minutes you can go from wiping the sweat off your brow to wiping proverbial tears from your eyes (unless you’re really sensitive which is cool too). I was vaguely familiar with their work and decided to see them play at Vinyl last summer. What took place that night quickly transcended into an experience I didn’t think was still possible with modern dance music. Then again, chances to see respected OG’s like this come few and far between. Not only was their work translated perfectly, it was weaved into a completely unpredictable performance utilizing tools outside the usual DJ decks. If you’ve forgotten, or are perhaps unaware, you have a massive opportunity to witness a chapter of music that never should’ve faded into the background. In most ways it really hasn’t. This duo is sewn into history with the likes of Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo, Deep Dish, and Sasha, and you can see them perform this weekend. It’s past, present, and future all at once.
We have all yearned for that sonic comfort within ourselves at some point. That place that strikes a chord in you so deep you could swear you were mainlining the secrets of humanity itself. That is what truly lies under the surface of these dance music gurus. There is a living-soul embedded in their work. So when the party ends and you look at that city skyline, and the weight of the world comes back, what do you really want as the soundtrack to your life at the end of the night? Mondays inherently fall victim to a bad reputation, but it’s not the calendar’s fault. It’s not even your boss’ fault. It’s really up to us to set the pace we want for the week. Traffic will always be there, the bus will always be late, and your back bike tire will always be flat. As I sit here and continue to bang my head against the work desk, I can only conclude that Tuesday morning at the office has never felt so bleak. That’s only in contrast to the wonderfully depraved experience I had over just over a week ago. Last Saturday was the 3rd edition of Sorted, an event catered to the lovers of Techno and everything else that goes bump in the night. What transpired is exactly what makes Denver so integral to the country’s pulse in underground electronic music. Solid bookings of underground enforcers like Call Super and Hodge kept the sweat going and the floor burning all night long. It was vicious, communal to the core, and everything we needed. Ending the week on a high note is a custom here in Denver. That tradition is going stronger than ever, perhaps with more concentrated passion than the actual weekend itself. Summer is upon us and it’s time to move outside my friends. As part of the Proper Sundays series, Afterhours Anonymous is bringing the eclectic duo Thugfucker to Beta Nightclub tomorrow afternoon for a daytime shindig! For those of you who haven’t been to these day parties, you’ll notice a refreshing lack of spiked high-heels and overcrowded bottle service tables. Instead you’re greeted with a crowd predominantly made of people who are there for the music and not the potential selfie opportunities with one-night-stands. Good afternoon! Tis’ the season for yuletide cheer and barside beers, and if you’re like us (which we assume you are), you’re spending the holidays in the warming embrace of beats galore. While the physical House of Acid_Reviews may be buried under almost a foot of snow, that doesn’t mean we can’t spread our love of Techno to the winterized streets of Denver. We’ve turned the lights back on, and this time we’re staying for good. In celebration of our relocation to the Blue Mountain State, we’ve curated an exclusive review to showcase the thriving music scene here with local beat-fanatic Evan Franklin! The decades-old movement of Techno is alive and well in the Colorado capital, and we’ve got the goods ready to flow out like an iron fist of sonic love. We are proud to present our first of many guest-reviews, an inaugural analysis of live music from our new Denver affiliate Evan. Check out his exclusive review of underground mainstay Marco Shuttle, who took the weekend to a new sonic level last Friday at Eko-House!
If there is one thing to be said of Denver’s techno scene: they are committed. I would even go as far as to call them “ravenous,” yet while their hunger is nearly limitless, they are also one of the most polite, accommodating, and well-mannered groups of music fans I have encountered. I believe this can be attributed in a tremendous way to one of the city’s techno masterminds: John Templeton. Not only is he an incredible musical entity in his own right (making his Bunker NY debut the evening following this event), but he has been one of the sharpest and most attentive Colorado promoters since the inception of his now-retired Communikey collective over a decade ago. His savviness as a promoter has been proven time and time again, (see RA’s review of Denver’s Great American Techno Festival for a glimmering example) and this night was no different.
Marco Shuttle was slated to play the Eko House, a south Denver art gallery moonlighting as a space for techno/house/what-have-you parties. It was also slated to be the inaugural event of Templeton’s new project/collective: Vicious Circle. Eko House was a staple of the aforementioned GATF, and seemed promising as one of Denver’s new afterhours hotspots. That was, until they closed their doors to music mere weeks before the night of the shuttle event. Where another promoter’s knees may have buckled, Templeton saw only opportunity. A new space was secured, and what a space it was.

It’s all about feeling ladies and gentlemen, and the latest remix from Solomun is a blitzkrieg of emotion. The German producer’s rework of Liu Bei’s “Atlas World” premiered on DJ Mag yesterday, and it is sweet as it is dark. While we love a good floor banger as much as the next music blog, the world is in serious need of artistic direction. Dance music should be viewed like the humans who make it- if it doesn’t have a soul, it’s probably not safe to be around. It seems that yet again, DIYNAMIC Music is answering the call for quality over calamity, proving once again the future of international techno is safe in the hands of artists like Solomun.
